Assisted Living 

Assisted livings are Individual apartments in large property that are licensed by the State of California.

 

Assisted livings offer social activities, Chef prepared meals, assistance with personal care, and staff that is available 24/7.   

 

Residents need to be able to push a pendant or pull a pull cord if they need assistance from the staff. 

​

Caregivers can assist with showering, bathing dressing, grooming and hygiene/personal care, getting up and around, and medication assistance. 

​

These properties are considered

Non-Medical properties.  

 

If it is not a temporary situation most large properties will charge an extra fee to assist the resident to and from the dining room(escort service) or to bring a tray to the resident's room(tray charge).   

​

These apartments are unfurnished.  Accommodations include Studios, 1-bedrooms and some have 2 bedrooms.

​

Many have a small refrigerator and enough deck space for a small microwave.  

 

If the resident is in a hospital or skilled nursing facility,  they may be eligible for a hospital bed upon discharge, and we can look into that for you.

Board & Care / Residential Care Home

The terms Board and Care and Residential Care Home are used interchangeably. 

 

They are residential homes located in residential neighborhoods that are licensed by the state of California to provide care and assistance for seniors. 

 

Board & Care provides care and assistance for a maximum of 6 residents and generally offer shared and private room options. 

​

Care givers are available 24/7 and provide assistance with meals, medications, showering, bathing, dressing, toileting, and assistance transferring to get up and around. 

 

Not all Board & Cares offer 24-hour "awake staff".   They will have caregivers 24/7 but the caregivers will put the residents to bed and then also go to bed themselves, so not all Board and Cares are the same.

Memory Care

Memory Care can be provided in a Board and care, Assisted Living, or a secured Memory care property, it all depends upon the resident's care needs.   

 

Memory care staff provide residents with personal care, showering, bathing, dressing, meals, medications, feeding assistance, transfers and offer social activities tailored for individuals with a dementia diagnosis.  

​

The rooms may be furnished or unfurnished depending upon the type or property selected.

 

Memory Care properties are considered non-medical properties.

Independent Living

Independent living properties do not always require the resident to be independent.

 

Many Independent Living properties have a third-party caregiver agency on site for a set number of hours per day or a few have caregiver agency staff on site 24/7. 

 

Care giver staff can an assist with personal care, medication assistance, help getting up and around, assistance showering, bathing and dressing, getting to the dining room for meals, or bringing meals to the room, housekeeping and laundry.    

 

Many Independent living communities provide chef prepared meals, social activities, weekly housekeeping and basic utilities.

 

These are individual unfurnished apartments.

  

Respite Care

Respite care is a term that purely means short term.  The duration of care can be for as little as 7 days up to a few weeks.  Respite care is generally provided in an Assisted Living or Memory Care.  Occasionally, a Board and Care may consider a short-term stay as well.   

 

Respite care allows a caregiver to have some time to recharge, go on vacation, handle some other family business or perhaps get needed care for themselves while their loved one is still receiving care and assistance outside of their home in an Assisted Living, Memory Care or Board and Care. 

​

Not all properties provide Respite Care and some will have minimum stay as well. 

​

Respite stays are based on a daily rate inclusive of care and lodging in a furnished room, and the daily rate is based upon the level of care the individual needs.  

Home Care /Home Health /Hospice Care

Home care is where a private care giver agency comes to where the individual is living and provides care and assistance with meals, personal care, and light housekeeping. 

 

This is a private pay option, and it is not covered by most insurance plans, except under Long-Term Care insurance plans,  MediCal programs (IHSS) and VA programs (Home Maker). 

 

We only work with licensed, bonded and insured care giver companies to ensure the best options for you or your loved one.

 

Home Health sounds very much like Home Care but it is not the same. 

 

Home Health is a covered benefit under most insurance plans and provides a nurse for weekly visits, a physical therapists for visits generally 2X per week, and if needed a bath aid to assist with weekly bathing. 

 

Hospice is also a benefit under most insurance plans that can assist with comfort care for qualified patients and covers a number of supplies, hospital bed, bath aid, nurse, physician and so much more. 

 

Both home health and hospice services can be provided in a Assisted living, Memory Care, Board and Care or at a resident's home.

Forms for Placement

State of California has a packet of forms that is needed for placement in an Assisted Living, Memory Care or Board & Care in the state of California.   (This includes respite stays as well)

 

The forms will be filled out by the patient's Primary Care Physician if the patient is at home or possibly by the Hospice doctor if the patient is on Hospice. 

If the patient is in the hospital, generally the hospital doctor will fill them out or if the patient is in a skilled nursing facility their doctor will fill them out.   

 

Keep the original for yourself and copies and be provided to the properties you are touring with us.   We can email you the packet.
